Investors Back Quantum-Resistant Bitcoin with $15M Pledge

BlackRock, Coinbase and Strategy Pledge $15M to Quantum-Proof Bitcoin

BlackRock, Coinbase and Strategy have pledged a combined $15 million toward efforts to make Bitcoin more resilient against potential future threats from quantum computing.

The pledge reflects a growing focus among major industry players on “quantum-proofing” Bitcoin—work that generally refers to evaluating and, where necessary, upgrading cryptographic assumptions that secure wallets and transactions. Bitcoin’s security today relies on widely used public-key cryptography, which is considered robust against classical computers but could face new risks if sufficiently powerful quantum machines become practical.

While quantum computing is not currently known to be capable of breaking Bitcoin’s cryptography at scale, the topic has become an important part of long-term security planning. Changes aimed at post-quantum security would likely require careful coordination across Bitcoin’s open-source developer ecosystem, miners, wallet providers, exchanges, custodians, and other infrastructure operators.

In broader context, the pledge underscores how Bitcoin’s largest stakeholders are increasingly willing to fund security-related research and engineering. As institutional participation grows—through custodial services, exchange infrastructure, and investment products—so does attention to risks that may be distant but consequential, particularly those that could require ecosystem-wide upgrades rather than isolated fixes.
