Stake-Based Payments Power AI Compute on NEAR

NEAR Adds Staking-Based Payments For AI Compute Credits

NEAR has introduced a new staking-based payment option designed to let users pay for AI compute credits using a mechanism tied to network staking.

The update connects payments for compute resources to the staking system, positioning staking not only as a way to help secure the network, but also as a method to access services that require ongoing resource consumption.

Why it matters: staking has traditionally been used in proof-of-stake networks to validate transactions and earn rewards. By extending staking’s role into service payments, NEAR is linking on-chain economic activity to off-chain resource usage, in this case AI compute credits.

The move also fits into a broader trend across crypto: networks are increasingly experimenting with ways to make tokens and staking more directly useful beyond governance and transaction fees, particularly for emerging categories like AI infrastructure and compute marketplaces.
