AI Bots Process 138M Crypto Payments, Most Were Tiny

AI Agents Made 138 Million Crypto Payments in a Year. Most Were Tiny
Crypto payments made by AI agents have climbed sharply over the past year, with activity concentrated in small-dollar transactions tied to AI services, according to findings highlighted by Chainalysis.
The data focuses on payments routed through Coinbase’s x402 protocol, a system used to facilitate onchain payments. Chainalysis found that payments using x402 surged from about 1,500 in mid-2025 to more than 138 million by Q3 2026.
While the total count is large, the pattern of use points to high-frequency, low-value transfers rather than traditional retail spending. In other words, “most were tiny” payments—consistent with machine-driven workflows where software agents pay for discrete tasks, requests, or usage-based services.
Chainalysis also noted a geographic skew in who is funding this activity: U.S. wallets dominated spending on AI models. That suggests much of the demand for AI-related crypto payments is currently coming from U.S.-based users and organizations interacting with model providers and related tooling.
The broader significance is less about consumer checkout adoption and more about the emergence of machine-to-machine commerce. Micropayments have long been cited as a potential use case for crypto rails, but have been difficult to implement efficiently with traditional payment systems. The scale-up in x402 transactions indicates that AI-driven usage patterns—many small requests that each need to be paid for—are a natural fit for onchain settlement.
- What happened: x402 payments grew from roughly 1,500 in mid-2025 to over 138 million by Q3 2026.
- Why it matters: The volume suggests growing real-world use of crypto payments for AI-related services, largely via small transactions.
- Context: U.S. wallets led spending on AI models, pointing to concentrated demand in the U.S. market.
