Unlock XRP Demand with RWA Tokenization and Onchain Credit

Why RWA Tokenization and Onchain Credit Could Boost XRP Demand
Real-world asset (RWA) tokenization is moving from concept to a sizable onchain market, and Ripple is positioning the XRP Ledger (XRPL) as infrastructure for bringing traditional financial products onto blockchain rails.
RWA tokenization refers to issuing a digital token on a blockchain that represents ownership of, or a claim on, an offchain asset such as a U.S. Treasury bill, gold, private credit, equities, or real estate. The token becomes the onchain settlement and record-keeping layer, while the underlying asset remains with a custodian or issuer. In practice, this can allow assets that typically settle in days to settle in minutes, with onchain programmability and transparency.
Data cited from Allium shows the onchain RWA market reached $30.9 billion in August 2026, up about 196% year over year. The largest category is tokenized Treasuries and money market funds at $17.0 billion, followed by commodities at $4.3 billion and private credit at $4.0 billion.
The growth of tokenized Treasuries has also tracked with the expansion of stablecoins as a payment and value-transfer rail. A joint FXC Intelligence and Allium analysis has documented stablecoins’ increasing share of cross-border payments. Tokenized Treasuries and money market funds give stablecoin holders a way to earn yield without exiting onchain environments, linking the growth of the two categories.
Ripple, which supports the XRPL ecosystem, has highlighted RWA tokenization as a focus area for the network. Ripple has described its work with partners as enabling tokenization use cases on the XRP Ledger, framing tokenization as an “infrastructure layer” upgrade that can make asset management and settlement faster and more transparent for institutions.
In parallel, XRPL advocates have argued that tokenization and lending features could translate into more consistent demand for XRP as networks add financial activity that requires onchain settlement. In a separate ecosystem commentary, Odelia Torteman, head of digital assets at XRPL Commons, said that despite XRP’s decline from its mid-2025 peak, institutional adoption and developer activity on the XRP Ledger have remained resilient, with enterprise use and RWA tokenization among the drivers being emphasized.
Tokenized credit, in particular, raises operational expectations. In traditional finance, instruments like CLOs and private credit facilities can involve complex waterfall mechanics, ongoing collateral oversight, and coordination across multiple intermediaries. Moving these structures onchain increases the need for real-time operational controls, since collateral can move 24/7 and transparency is higher.
Why it matters: As more financial assets are tokenized and managed onchain, networks that can support compliance-oriented custody, settlement, and complex credit workflows may see increased usage. The current mix of onchain RWAs—dominated by tokenized Treasuries, with growing commodities and private credit—shows that demand is extending beyond crypto-native assets toward familiar, regulated financial products.
- RWA tokenization puts claims on offchain assets onto a blockchain for faster settlement and programmable workflows.
- Market growth to $30.9 billion in August 2026 reflects accelerating adoption across Treasuries, commodities, and private credit.
- Stablecoins and tokenized Treasuries are developing in tandem, as onchain cash seeks yield-bearing options without leaving blockchain rails.
- Onchain credit introduces higher infrastructure requirements, potentially driving demand for robust settlement and operational tooling.
