Italy Dismantles Crypto Mafia Bank, Seizes $24 Million in Laundered Funds

Italy Busts Alleged Mafia “Secret Bank” That Laundered Money Through Crypto, Seizes $24 Million

Italian authorities have dismantled an alleged underground bank operated from a car-rental business near Milan, arresting 30 people and confiscating assets worth about €21 million ($23.6 million).

The operation was led by Italy’s Guardia di Finanza under orders from Milan’s anti-mafia prosecutors. Investigators said the suspects had links to the ’Ndrangheta, the Camorra and organized crime groups from Foggia.

The seized assets included cryptocurrency, cash, bank balances, boats, jewelry and luxury watches. Authorities described the business as a “hidden bank” that allegedly provided financial services to organized crime outside the regulated banking system.

According to the allegations, individuals could provide cash and receive cryptocurrency or international bank transfers in return. The group also allegedly processed proceeds from online cryptocurrency investment scams.

The case highlights how digital assets can be used alongside traditional financial tools to move or conceal criminal proceeds. Cryptocurrency transactions are recorded on public blockchains, but identifying the people behind wallet addresses can require additional investigative work, particularly when funds pass through multiple accounts or services.

The arrests and asset seizures are part of an investigation and do not establish guilt. The suspects will be subject to Italy’s judicial process as authorities continue examining the alleged links between the operation and the criminal networks involved.
