Akrites Unveiled: Linux Foundation, Giants Defend Open Source from AI Attacks

Linux Foundation, Tech Giants Launch Akrites to Defend Open Source Against AI-Powered Attacks
The Linux Foundation and a group of major technology companies have launched Akrites, a new initiative aimed at strengthening defenses for open-source software against attacks that use artificial intelligence.
Akrites is positioned as a security-focused effort designed to help open-source maintainers and the broader software supply chain respond to a changing threat environment, where attackers can use AI tools to scale reconnaissance, automate exploitation, and generate convincing malicious code or communications.
Open-source components are widely embedded across modern technology stacks, including crypto infrastructure such as node software, wallets, developer libraries, and the cloud services that exchanges and protocols rely on. That widespread reuse is a key strength of open source, but it also means weaknesses can have outsized downstream impact.
By convening the Linux Foundation alongside large industry participants, Akrites signals a coordinated push to improve shared security practices and resilience across the open-source ecosystem as AI-enabled threats become more practical.
