Court Greenlights IRS Seizure of 24 Crypto Wallets Tied to Tax Evasion

The D.C. federal court just green-lit the IRS’s seizure of twenty-four cryptocurrency wallets tied to tax evasion, ruling that digital assets are fully reachable under civil forfeiture statutes. This decision arms the government with a clearer path to pursue hidden crypto holdings and signals that anonymity alone is no longer a reliable shield against federal enforcement.

The case began when IRS agents traced Bitcoin wallets belonging to a taxpayer who had failed to report more than $3 million in gains. The government filed an in-rem forfeiture action against the wallets themselves, arguing they were proceeds of tax fraud. The wallet owners never appeared to contest the seizure, but the court still had to decide whether cryptocurrency could be treated like cash or bank accounts under U.S. forfeiture law.

The judges answered yes. They held that the wallets met the statutory definition of “property” subject to forfeiture and that the IRS had shown probable cause linking the coins to unreported income. Because no claimants stepped forward to challenge the allegations, the court ordered the assets forfeited to the United States.

In plain terms, the ruling confirms that the IRS can seize crypto just as it seizes real estate or brokerage accounts when tax laws are broken. It also cements the principle that merely holding coins in a digital wallet does not create a legal barrier to forfeiture.

For markets, the decision tightens the perceived gap between on-chain privacy and enforcement reach. Traders who thought offshore wallets or mixer services would keep assets beyond the IRS’s grasp now face a precedent that treats every blockchain address as a potential target. Exchanges could see heightened compliance pressure, knowing that wallet-level forfeiture orders may increasingly land on their hot wallets or customer deposits.

The takeaway: if you owe the IRS and your coins are on-chain, the government now has an easier legal map to follow.
