Crypto Hacks Cost $1.26B as Bitcoin Bulls Rally

Crypto lost $1.26 billion in hacks while bitcoin bulls enjoyed a monster quarter
The crypto industry recorded 247 security incidents in the third quarter, with losses totaling $1.26 billion, according to data tracked by crypto security firm CertiK. That brings estimated losses for the year so far to $2.68 billion.
September stood out as the worst month of 2026 to date. CertiK counted 99 incidents—the most in a single month since February 2025—and estimated $768.5 million stolen, marking the largest monthly haul of 2026.
The spike in thefts came during a quarter when market performance told a very different story. Bitcoin closed the third quarter up 40%, outperforming major assets even as U.S. Treasury yields climbed to their highest levels in more than two decades. Investor demand also showed up in billions of dollars flowing into exchange-traded funds tied to bitcoin and other tokens, while several altcoins posted even larger gains.
The contrast highlights an ongoing divide in crypto: strong price action can coexist with significant operational risk. Bitcoin’s underlying security model is distinct from the broader ecosystem of smart contract platforms and applications where many exploits typically occur, leaving the industry grappling with persistent vulnerabilities even during bullish periods.
CertiK described September as a warning about how quickly conditions can deteriorate. In a post on X, the firm said: “September was a stark reminder of how quickly the threat landscape can shift. With both losses and incident count reaching their highest levels of 2026, the month’s data reinforces the need for security across every layer.”
