Europol Freezes $47M in Crypto After Global Infostealer Takedown

$47M in Crypto Frozen in Global Infostealer Takedown: Europol
European law enforcement has frozen roughly $47 million in cryptocurrency as part of a coordinated international operation targeting so-called “infostealer” malware, according to Europol.
The action focused on criminal infrastructure used to harvest sensitive data from infected devices. Infostealers are typically designed to quietly extract information such as login credentials, browser data, and other access details that can later be used to break into online accounts—including crypto exchanges, wallets, and email services.
Europol said the operation resulted in funds being frozen, underscoring how proceeds linked to cybercrime increasingly move through digital assets and how authorities are expanding their ability to trace and immobilize them.
The seizure highlights a broader shift in enforcement strategy: rather than focusing solely on individual attackers, agencies are increasingly aiming to disrupt the tools, marketplaces, and financial channels that make large-scale credential theft profitable.
For the crypto industry, the development is a reminder that many losses attributed to “hacks” can start much earlier—at the endpoint level—when malware steals credentials or session data that attackers can use to access accounts without breaching a platform directly.
