Europol Warns Quantum Computing Could Crack Exposed Private Keys

Quantum computers threaten exposed private keys rather than blockchains, Europol warns

Quantum computers pose a greater risk to exposed cryptocurrency private keys than to the underlying blockchains themselves, according to a warning from Europol.

The distinction is important because private keys are used to authorize transactions. If a key becomes exposed and future quantum systems can break the cryptography protecting it, the assets controlled by that key could be at risk.

Europol’s warning suggests that the primary concern is not the immediate collapse of blockchain networks, but the security of accounts whose cryptographic keys have been revealed or otherwise made vulnerable.

The issue highlights the importance of separating blockchain infrastructure from the cryptographic credentials used to control individual assets. As quantum computing develops, protecting exposed keys may become a more urgent security priority than replacing blockchains themselves.
