OP Token Buybacks Fueled by Half of Superchain Revenue

Optimism proposes OP token buybacks using 50% of Superchain revenue
Optimism has put forward a plan to use 50% of Superchain revenue to buy back OP tokens, a move designed to link token value more directly to network usage.
Under the proposal, 50% of incoming Superchain sequencer revenue would be allocated to monthly OP buybacks for an initial 12-month period starting in February. The plan is subject to a governance vote scheduled for 22 January.
The proposal signals a shift in how OP is positioned within the Optimism ecosystem. Rather than being framed primarily as a governance-focused asset, the buyback mechanism would more closely align OP with the economic activity generated by the Superchain.
By tying a portion of sequencer revenue to regular token purchases, the plan would create a direct connection between Superchain usage and OP market demand, using onchain revenue as the funding source.
