Solana Launches Alpenglow: Biggest Network Overhaul Since 2020

Solana’s Alpenglow, its biggest network overhaul since 2020, goes live Wednesday
Solana is set to activate Alpenglow, a major redesign of how the network reaches consensus, on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. The upgrade is scheduled to switch on at the start of epoch 1064, at approximately 15:00 UTC, marking what core developers describe as the largest change to Solana’s consensus system since the blockchain launched in 2020.
Consensus is the mechanism that lets Solana’s validators agree on the ordering of transactions and when a transaction is considered irreversible. Today, Solana’s finality is roughly 12.8 seconds. Alpenglow is designed to reduce that to around 100–150 milliseconds, largely by changing how validators vote and finalize blocks, including moving votes off-chain.
The rollout has been tested for months on a community validator test cluster. Galaxy, which operated a validator on that cluster, said the process included six “re-geneses” (chain restarts from a new genesis block), as well as a failed migration and rollback before a later successful migration. Solana’s devnet activation is listed as having occurred on September 25, 2026.
Alpenglow also introduces a new security approach described as a “20+20” model, aimed at improving network safety. In addition, the upgrade changes validator voting economics by replacing per-vote costs with a flat 0.8 SOL per epoch fee charged from a validator’s vote account after activation.
One of the practical effects is a lower barrier to running a validator profitably. The minimum profitable stake is expected to fall from about 4,850 SOL to roughly 450 SOL, potentially broadening validator participation to smaller operators. Solana’s stake reward mechanics are not expected to change as part of the upgrade.
Alpenglow is considered a breaking change and comes with indexing changes for ecosystem infrastructure. The activation is controlled by a feature gate, and validators must follow the required registration steps, including updates related to BLS public keys and the Validator Admission Ticket.
- Mainnet activation: Epoch 1064, Wednesday, October 21, 2026 (~15:00 UTC)
- Finality target: ~100–150 milliseconds (down from ~12.8 seconds)
- Validator voting fees: Flat 0.8 SOL per epoch replaces per-vote costs
- Validator economics: Minimum profitable stake drops to ~450 SOL from ~4,850 SOL
- Security: New “20+20” model
By replacing the voting system Solana has used since 2020, Alpenglow represents a foundational update to how the network confirms transactions and coordinates validators—an uncommon type of change among large, live blockchains.
