Terra Luna Fraud: Do Kwon Faces 15-Year Sentence

Morning Minute: Do Kwon Gets 15 Years for $40B Terra Luna Fraud

Do Kwon, the South Korean cryptocurrency entrepreneur behind the TerraUSD and Luna digital currencies, was sentenced on Thursday to 15 years in U.S. prison for fraud tied to the 2022 collapse of the Terra ecosystem, which erased an estimated $40 billion in value.

The sentencing was handed down in Manhattan federal court in the Southern District of New York. U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer called the conduct an “epic fraud” and said the case was among the most harmful seen in federal prosecutions.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, Kwon—identified as Do Hyeong Kwon—was sentenced for wire fraud and for conspiring to commit securities fraud, commodities fraud, and wire fraud.

Kwon, 34, co-founded Singapore-based Terraform Labs and helped develop TerraUSD and Luna. Prosecutors said he misled investors about a coin that was designed to maintain a steady price during periods of crypto-market volatility. Kwon pleaded guilty in August to fraud charges related to the Terra-Luna collapse.

The TerraUSD and Luna implosion in May 2022 became one of the defining failures of the modern crypto market, triggering broader stress across the sector and contributing to a series of cascading crises. The case is a prominent example of U.S. authorities using traditional fraud statutes to pursue major misconduct tied to digital-asset products.
