Tether Buys $800M in Bitcoin, Surpasses 96,000 BTC

Tether adds nearly $800 million in bitcoin, bringing holdings above 96,000 BTC

Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, has increased its bitcoin reserves after adding 8,888 BTC in the final quarter of 2025. The transfer was worth roughly $780 million at prevailing prices, lifting Tether’s total bitcoin holdings to 96,185 BTC, valued at about $8.42 billion.

The purchase was disclosed publicly by Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino and aligns with a treasury strategy the company introduced in 2023. Under that policy, Tether said it would allocate up to 15% of realized quarterly operating profits toward bitcoin purchases.

The latest addition reinforces a strategy that has quietly made the world’s largest stablecoin issuer one of the larger corporate bitcoin holders. Market reporting described the move as occurring around New Year’s Eve, with on-chain activity indicating the coins were sent to a Tether-linked reserve address.

Data from Arkham Intelligence has been used by multiple outlets to track Tether-labeled wallets. Arkham-labeled on-chain reporting in early November showed about 961 BTC moving into a Tether-labeled reserve wallet, bringing its holdings to roughly 87,296 BTC at that time, based on the figures cited in the provided information.

Tether’s bitcoin balance has also been the subject of close attention because its reported holdings have fluctuated. After a first-quarter purchase, the company held over 100,000 BTC, but that balance later declined before the Q4 purchase brought holdings back above 96,000 BTC.

Some third-party estimates differed slightly on the quarter’s total accumulation. For example, Ember estimated Tether bought 9,850 BTC in Q4 2025, referencing on-chain withdrawals that included the 961 BTC movement in November and the later transfer of 8,888 BTC to a reserve address.

The broader significance is that Tether is using a portion of its profit—often associated with income generated from its reserve holdings— to build direct bitcoin exposure over time. With the latest purchase, Tether’s disclosed holdings place it among the top private BTC holders.
