Texas Court Denies Mandamus, Keeps Discovery Order Against Envy Blockchain

Wellermen Image Court Reins In Crypto Firm’s Mandamus Bid

Envy Blockchain Inc., NV Landco 1 LLC, and Stephen Decani have lost their bid to short-circuit a lower-court discovery fight. The Eighth Court of Appeals in El Paso denied the mandamus petition, refusing to shield the petitioners from producing documents in a case that already threatens to expose their digital-asset dealings.

The fight began when a Texas district court ordered Envy Blockchain and its co-petitioners to turn over records relating to token sales, wallet addresses, and internal governance minutes. Rather than comply, the company raced to the appeals court claiming the discovery order was “oppressive” and risked revealing trade secrets. The justices found that the petitioners failed to show the order was so burdensome that ordinary appeal would be inadequate, the high bar for mandamus relief.

The ruling leaves the discovery order intact. Envy must now produce the requested materials or face sanctions that could include adverse findings or contempt. For regulators and plaintiffs eyeing crypto ventures, the decision signals that Texas courts will not easily let blockchain firms cloak their operations behind extraordinary writs.

The immediate takeaway is that discovery fights in crypto cases will continue to be fought on the front lines of the trial courts rather than leap-frogged to appellate benches. Companies hoping to keep wallet keys and token economics under seal will have to build a more compelling record of harm than Envy did here.

For exchanges, DeFi protocols, and traders, the message is blunt: Texas judges are unlikely to view blockchain records as automatically “special” or beyond ordinary civil reach. That raises compliance costs and litigation risk for any crypto business operating in the state, while giving plaintiffs a clearer path to internal documents that can drive settlement leverage or regulatory referrals.

In short, the courthouse door just got a little harder to slam shut on crypto discovery.
