A federal judicial panel has rejected efforts to consolidate three related crypto lawsuits into a single Illinois courtroom, forcing the cases to proceed separately across three states. The decision signals that courts are tightening control over where crypto disputes land—and who gets to steer them.
Plaintiff Anthony Motto, already litigating in Chicago, asked the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation to pull in two other suits from California and Pennsylvania. He argued that overlapping claims about digital-asset sales and platform practices made a single venue more efficient. The panel disagreed, finding the factual overlap insufficient to justify centralization. Each case will now stay where it started, preserving three separate dockets and three sets of judges.
The ruling narrows the path for plaintiffs seeking to steer crypto litigation toward plaintiff-friendly districts. It also raises the cost and complexity for platforms facing multiple suits, since coordinated discovery or settlement talks become harder when cases remain scattered. Regulators, meanwhile, may see an opening: fragmented litigation can produce conflicting rulings that invite clearer federal rules or more aggressive enforcement.
The decision tightens the screws on forum selection in crypto cases without touching the underlying legal theories. Plaintiffs lose a tactical tool, exchanges gain breathing room from nationwide consolidation, and both sides face higher litigation costs that may push marginal claims toward quicker resolution or outright dismissal.
Traders should watch for ripple effects: scattered rulings can create enforcement gaps that exchanges exploit, but they can also produce contradictory precedents that invite the SEC or CFTC to step in with new guidance. The market’s appetite for regulatory certainty just got a little more expensive.
