Cypherpunk Denies Robinhood Token Amid ZEC Pump-and-Dump Rumors

Cypherpunk distances itself from Robinhood blockchain token as Zcash debate intensifies
Nasdaq-listed Cypherpunk Technologies, one of the two known public companies with exposure to Zcash’s treasury ecosystem, has moved to clarify its relationship to a token circulating on Robinhood’s blockchain platform that uses the Zcash ticker.
According to snippets shared from the company’s messaging, Cypherpunk said it only holds ZEC and is not affiliated with a stock token bearing its name on Robinhood’s blockchain. The statement places Cypherpunk among a growing list of public companies pushing back on third-party tokens that imply a connection to their brands or balance sheets.
The clarification comes amid renewed attention on Zcash following Robinhood’s decision to make Zcash (ZEC) available for nationwide trading across its app and web platform in the U.S. The rollout was framed as a notable shift for a privacy-focused asset that has often faced limited availability on regulated U.S. venues.
Robinhood’s listing also coincided with a sharp burst of market activity. Within the first hour of the listing going live, trading volume increased 400%, and ZEC rose 15% to $42.18 by mid-afternoon UTC, according to the provided figures.
For Cypherpunk, the moment intersects with a company strategy that is unusually concentrated in Zcash. In a PRNewswire release dated April 15, 2026, the company said it purchased 9,163.32 ZEC for $2.15 million at an average price of $234.63 per ZEC, bringing total holdings to 303,906.40 ZEC. Cypherpunk said that position equated to 1.82% network ownership and carried an average cost basis of $332.83 per ZEC.
That exposure has also amplified earnings volatility. In its first-quarter 2026 earnings report released last month, Cypherpunk reported a net loss of $77.2 million, which it attributed largely to unrealized losses on its ZEC holdings.
Cypherpunk has also expanded beyond holding ZEC into infrastructure. On Aug. 18, 2026, the company announced the launch of Cypherpunk Mining, which it described as the world’s largest Zcash mining fleet. The company said the fleet was established through a $33.33 million equity-based transaction with Winklevoss Capital and was operating at approximately 4.2 GSol/s of Equihash hashrate, representing about 18% of the Zcash network.
The broader public-company footprint for Zcash remains small. The second public company cited with ZEC exposure is Reliance Global Holdings (EZRA), which reported holding 213.14 ZEC as of March 31, 2026—far less than Cypherpunk. Reliance shares were down about 2% on Friday, a smaller decline than Cypherpunk’s, which the provided information linked to the difference in ZEC exposure size.
Separately, the news cycle also included commentary critical of recent ZEC market moves, including a claim from Mow labeling ZEC a “pump and dump.” Cypherpunk’s disavowal of a Robinhood-chain token underscores a related issue: as Zcash gains distribution on mainstream platforms, public companies associated with the asset may face more frequent confusion between on-chain tokens, tickers, and corporate identities.
