Soneium Outlines Tokenized Entertainment IP Plan

Sony-backed blockchain network Soneium has outlined a move toward an onchain entertainment ecosystem built around tokenized intellectual property, with a planned native token called $SONEIUM. The initiative places licensing, funding and revenue-sharing tools at the center of a network that spans music, games, anime, film, collectibles and fan creations.

Bitcoin.com News reported that Soneium announced the strategy on Monday, describing a roadmap that combines tokenized IP with a native ecosystem token. The network has not issued $SONEIUM, and token generation event details are due to be announced later.

What happened

Soneium said its next phase will focus on tokenized intellectual property, according to Bitcoin.com News. The project’s first stated tokenized IP launch is Moriusa, a character IP from Tokyo-based Super State Holdings. The planned scope includes merchandise, an animated short series and wider licensing activity.

Crypto.news reported that the proposed Tokenized IP system would enable creators and entertainment companies to issue IP Tokens linked to individual artists, studios or particular entertainment titles. Depending on how they are structured, those tokens could operate as digital collectibles or as fungible assets within an individual property’s economy.

The planned $SONEIUM token is intended to connect creators, IP owners, builders, fans and investors in the onchain entertainment economy, Cryptonomist reported. Soneium has framed tokenized IP as a means of representing the future economic value associated with a creative work onchain.

The roadmap also includes support for ERC-8432, an open standard intended for machine-readable onchain IP licensing, Bitcoin.com News reported. Soneium Portal is planned as the principal hub for discovering IP, while Startale App is positioned as an entry point for users.

CryptoGames.gg reported that Soneium will work with K-pop IP company DayOneDream on an IP Bond product intended to tokenize concert business royalties connected to proven K-pop artists. CryptoGames.gg said DayOneDream manages BTOB, LEE CHAE YEON, MEMI and 2F. Bitcoin.com News styled the company name as Dayonedream, leaving a difference in naming across the reports.

Why it matters

The plan moves blockchain use in entertainment beyond the issuance of standalone digital collectibles. Cryptonews reported that Soneium sees tokenized IP as a potential route for creators and rights holders to develop new funding models, while allowing fans to support entertainment properties.

Cryptonomist reported that the model could allow creators to seek backing from fans and investors and potentially share commercial proceeds through automated revenue splits. The stated design also seeks to make ownership, licensing and royalty arrangements programmable, while allowing creators to retain rights and interests in their work.

That structure would place economic arrangements around a work alongside its digital representation. Rather than treating a token only as a collectible, Soneium’s proposal contemplates tokens associated with artists, studios and specific titles, with terms that may differ from one property to another, according to Crypto.news.

The proposal remains at an early stage. Supply, allocation and timing for a $SONEIUM token generation event are unconfirmed. Gas-fee change terms and U.S. investor eligibility are also unconfirmed, and the plans may change subject to laws.

Background and context

Soneium was co-developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs and Startale as an Ethereum layer 2 built on the OP Stack. Sony Block Solutions Labs is Sony’s blockchain unit, according to Cryptonomist.

The network already supports more than 250 applications across gaming, music, anime, film, collectibles and fan creations, Cryptonews reported. Chainwire separately described the ecosystem as including more than 250 applications across music, games, anime, film, collectibles and fan creations.

The Tokenized IP shift is framed around an AI era in which content can be created, distributed and remixed at scale. Its proposed framework centers on programmable registration, licensing and royalty splits, creating a mechanism through which entertainment assets can be recorded and administered onchain.

For creators, the stated objective is to support financing for future work and new relationships with audiences. Yuji Kumagai, Head of Soneium Protocol, said the platform aims to help creators fund their next work at a new scale, according to Coingabbar. For fans and investors, the model is designed to provide access to entertainment assets that have traditionally been difficult to access directly.

What to watch

The first question is how Moriusa will be structured in practice, including the distinction between merchandise, animation, licensing rights and any related onchain asset. The terms attached to individual IP Tokens will be important because Crypto.news said they may function either as collectibles or fungible assets.

It will also be important to see the eventual details of $SONEIUM, including its supply, allocation and token generation event timing. Soneium has said those event details will be announced later, according to Bitcoin.com News.

Other open questions include how ERC-8432 will be implemented for machine-readable licensing, how revenue splits will operate for different rights holders, and what eligibility rules will apply to participants in tokenized entertainment products. The DayOneDream IP Bond initiative will provide an early case for how concert business royalties may be brought into the proposed system.
